More Good News About Coffee

Scientists Were Shocked

A coffee study was done in Asia on some volunteer participants who were all of Asian descent. The study was intended for other scientific studies on the effects of increased coffee consumption.

An unexpected and unintended piece of information came out of the studies conducted by scientists on coffee drinkers that I found interesting. What is unknown from the study is would the same results occur if all other races were included in the coffee study. Here is what they did in the study. The participants in the study were instructed to increase their coffee consumption to 4 cups of coffee a day over a six month period of time.

The research findings were very intriguing.

The results uncovered was that the consumption of four cups of coffee daily creates a metabolic reaction that increases caloric burn. Another unexpected finding was the people in the study were found to have on average a four percent decrease in body fat that occurred in the coffee drinkers. The fat loss in the coffee drinkers was not the result of any diet or exercise.

Another study that helped validate the above mentioned study backs up the findings. A caffeine study was conducted to determine if caffeine can help people lose weight. Their studies showed a correlation that indicates caffeine does help the body burn more calories. When a body burns more calories, the metabolism increases to produce that energy.

There could be a strong correlation with caffeine intake that may help to suppress appetite.

The studies conducted have evidence that coffee drinkers fill full longer. Caffeine helps suppresses the appetite. The result would be a decrease in the nagging feelings of being hungry which cuts down on the munch time for needless calories that can easily and quickly put on the pounds.

Caffeine is being shown to increase the body’s metabolic rate so more calories are burned up for fuel. This caloric burn was shown to occur while the participants in the study were not physically active. The results of these studies showed that the effects of the caffeine consumed continues to burn body fuel over a period of time. The time frame of the duration of the effects were not disclosed. Don’t confuse drinking coffee and losing weight with lack of exercise as a one size fits all solution. There are many benefits to being physically active in some capacity.

These studies did not mention these items:

If the coffee contained cream and sugar, non dairy coffee creamer, milk, or any artificial sweeteners.

Syrups, flavorings, or plant based types of milk.

I am assume they drank only hot black coffee.

There was no mention of the types of coffee beans used for their coffee. There are 4 different varieties of coffee to take into consideration. Arabica, Robusta, Libericia, and Excelsa. Which coffee was used is important could provide more clues due to acidity levels of the coffee. Some varieties of coffee beans are more acidic naturally than other coffee beans.

Did the caffeine consumption from coffee occur at certain times of the day?

Were the sexes equally represented in this study?

What were their ages?

These studies are great news for people who enjoy their coffee.

I’m certain there will be more studies done on coffee consumption in the future. This article is not to promote four cups of coffee on a daily basis. For some people, that would be too much coffee as well as the effects of caffeine could be felt differently or more intensely than others. Use your judgement.

I’ve had some customers ask me about when I will be selling my coffee in K cups or also known as coffee pods. I’ve been vague about my reasons for why I don’t offer that type of coffee on my store. I only sell bagged coffee. I’ve had some knowledge about the dangers of heating up plastic that holds food and or drinks, but I did not have anything to really back up what I know until I recently did some online research on this subject. This researched information I’m sharing is about the K cups for coffee.

In case there is any confusion what K cups or coffee pods are, let me explain.

These plastic pods contain coffee for single brew coffee makers. Fantastic, quick, convenient low mess for a cup of coffee.

Recent information on the latest research is turning up the potential health issues of the use of K cups or pods for coffee drinkers. Coffee brewed from K cup machines may contain estrogen chemicals migrate out from plastics.

Here is how these estrogen like chemicals get into your coffee occurs.

The brewing process of K cups with high temperature water to brew coffee through plastic K cups for a tasty coffee extraction creates the release these estrogen chemicals that imitate estrogen. The estrogenic chemicals could possibly interfere or disrupt the endocrine system of the human body.

Here are some potential solutions to this problem.

Should you be concerned about this new found issue, the solution to this issue is to get the stainless steel pods for the K cup coffee makers. The downside is you would need to pack the stainless steel pods yourself to brew a single serving coffee. Actually this process is no different than making an espresso with the stainless steel handle that holds the coffee. The other option is to brew coffee in regular coffee makers.

Useful Tips For Coffee Grinds

After making a wonderful pot of coffee, don’t toss those coffee grinds out. Coffee grinds have multiple uses.

Here are some uses for coffee grinds that I have tried and I was amazed at the effectiveness of these recommended uses. There a few that I did not try because I don’t live in an area that normally gets a lot of snow. All natural ways to to use coffee grinds.

Coffee grounds scrub

Yes, great scrub to remove makeup, moisturization, and and act as an exfoliator. Leaves your skin feeling soft and moisturized.

Grab a glass jar with a lid that is clean and mix in

1/2 cup of coffee grinds

1/4 cup of coconut oil

Mix well. Apply to wet skin and rinse.

All natural way to de ice

Use coffee grinds on freshly shoveled walkways, sidewalks, driveway. Sprinkle around liberally. The coffee grinds help melt the ice and gives some traction to be able to walk in slippery icy situations. Reduces your risk of slips and falls in winter weather. This is a tip from a friend who uses this technique in the winter when the snow and ice hits.

The natural way to scrub and scour your pots and pans

Any dried stuck on food on your cookware or casserole dishes as well as your dishes can be scrubbed with coffee grinds. Wash and rinse. All natural and doesn’t scratch any surfaces. Save money and never buy those pads that rust after a use or two.

Natural deodorizer

Always keep your coffee bags sealed shut or the lids on tight because coffee can soap up odors in the air. Let’s be honest, no one wants funky tasting coffee. By keep your bags tightly closed and lids tight, your coffee will remain fresh and not take on any strange flavors from from any smells about. With that being said, coffee grinds are great to absorb odors any where you leave them out.

Coffee grinds work great in the refrigerator and freezer to absorb fridge smells. Just place a small bowl of coffee grounds in the refrigerator and the freezer to keep your fridge and freezer smelling fresh and clean with a hint of coffee. Works just as good as a box in the fridge and freezer. Just remember to change the grounds every few months. To keep the refrigerator smelling good.

Garbage Disposal Got The Funky Smells?

That nasty odor from your garbage disposal that waffles up when you turn it on or just near the disposal can be eliminated. Toss in a few tablespoons of coffee grounds down your garbage disposal. Let the coffee grounds sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Turn on the facet so water is going into the disposal and turn on the garbage disposal. Let the ground grind through your disposal.

Drains have a foul odor?

Place a few tablespoons of coffee ground down the drain followed with 3 drops of soap or dish detergent and run water down the drain.

From Coffee Flower To Coffee Cup

Everyone has seen roasted coffee beans for purchase. Have you seen a coffee bush start to bud with a beautiful coffee flower on a coffee tree? Have you ever wondered how the fresh coffee fruit becomes ground coffee that you purchase? Curious about how much work and time is involved in getting that coffee to your cup? Coffee agriculture is labor and time intensive farming.

Some folks are interested in learning about and traveling to visit coffee plantations. However, the times we are in currently, traveling is just too much of a hassle and can be risky right now. I’ve come across some good videos from Youtube that I decided to share in this article to help coffee curious folks learn more about how coffee is grown and harvested, then processed. Very informative and beautiful scenery.

The videos show how time consuming the process is to get coffee to your coffee maker for your morning brew. Seems that the skill sets needed to grow coffee is a mixture of agricultural farming and a flower nursery. Definitely creates a true appreciation and gratitude of that cup of daily coffee.

This video is very brief and shows gorgeous white lily like flowers in bloom on the branches of a coffee bush.

This video shows some amazing shots of coffee cherries on the bush. Shows each of the steps that has to be done in sequence to get the end result of a cup of coffee. This is not a fast process to get a bag of coffee to take home. Well worth the watch here.

Body Fat Burnt By Drinking Coffee

Want to lose body fat? Drink more coffee?

I have heard from some folks that coffee and tea can help lose some weight, but I was not sure if that was really possible. I decided to see if there was any truth to that rumor. Here’s what I researched and discovered about exercise and coffee. Volunteers for a scientific study were done on men that were healthy, physically active as well as exercised regularly. These guys worked out in the morning or late afternoon and coffee drinkers.

A study was published on those guys that participated in the exercise while caffeinated.

Their research showed that drinking a strong cup of coffee at least thirty minutes or more prior to exercise increases the body’s ability to burn body fat in men. The interesting part about the body fat burn happened at a higher rate in the afternoon than in the morning. Caffeine intake prior or during exercise uses body fat as a energy fuel source to help promote endurance for physical activity such as working out.

Their study discovered that athletes endurance is not that great in the morning compared to later in the afternoon. Logically makes sense because when a person gets up in the morning the body is not as flexible or limber, the body is slightly dehydrated and needs breakfast from sleeping 8 hours or so.

Late afternoon is the optimal time to workout to release the days stress and endurance is greater. The body is at it’s peak for the day in the afternoon from having had time to eat, hydrate, and limber up throughout the day.

Caffeine is known to occur naturally in coffee beans, tea leaves, and cocoa beans.

There are caffeinated foods and drinks on the market, but the caffeine was added therefore; not naturally occurring in these foods and drinks. This study and other similar studies focused on naturally occurring caffeine in coffee, timing of the drinking of the coffee prior to the actual physical work out for the day.

Remember to do everything in moderation.

Per the FDA, they recommend no more than 4 to 5 cups of coffee a day. For some people, that can be too much caffeine. There can be negatives to drinking too much caffeine so don’t over do the drinking of these beverages. This study done was on a small group of volunteers and still in the early study stages, but the information does look promising.

Always conduct your own research, analyze the information you read, and formulate your own opinions with the data you gather.

Demand for cheaper coffee and higher consumption of coffee over last few decades has created an increase of production of a lower cost coffee alternative on the store shelves. If you purchase coffee from the store, the coffee you purchase there is usually a lower quality coffee. The lower quality coffee is how the stores are able to offer inexpensive coffees and still make their profits.

The less costly Robusta coffee is often used in stores for their coffees.

The differences between Arabica coffee and Robusta coffee.

Robusta coffee can be grown in diverse climates with a much higher yielding crops. Robusta coffee beans produce more coffee. Higher yields means cheaper to grow so it is frequently used in lower quality blends of coffee in stores to keep product costs lower for consumers.

Robusta produces higher caffeine in the beans.

High caffeine content in the Robusta coffee beans results in a slightly bitter taste that some people may find unpleasant. Robusta the coffee is enjoyed by many people globally and suits their tastes which is nothing wrong with that.

The Arabic coffee can not be mass produced.

Pure Arabica coffee is more complicated to grow with lower crop yields as well as longer growing times. These factors are why Arabica coffee is more costly. Altitude and soil quality affects the coffee flavors as well as their growing times. Drinking coffee or any caffeinated beverages are okay in moderation. Coffee contains caffeine which is a stimulant that affects the central nervous system. The caffeine stimulant is naturally occurring in coffee and teas, but not in energy drinks or sodas.

Most research indicates that 400 mg per day is the acceptable limit and anything over that is just too much caffeine for the body which can produce some temporary side effects until the caffeine wears off or metabolizes. Some of the adverse side effects of too much caffeine are anxiety, heart palpitations, restlessness, inability to go to sleep or sleep interruptions because not in a deep sleep and keep waking up. The other negative side affects of over indulging on caffeine in a cup of coffee include rapid breathing, increased stress levels, and the shakes or aka tremors.

High amounts of caffeine can be dangerous, so do keep that in mind.

There is a balance between right amount of caffeine to be alert to start your day or drink too much you will experience jittery edgy feelings from too much caffeine. The 400 mg of caffeine is around 4 to 5 cups per day of coffee or other caffeinated beverage. According to the FDA, 4 to 5 cups of coffee is not normally associated with any negative affects on the body.

Don’t forget to include that caffeine also comes in sodas, cocoa, energy drinks, and tea in addition to coffee. Keep a running daily total of how much you are consuming in caffeinated drink form daily so you stay within that range . If you hit the jittery range at 3 cups of coffee, then you have learned from experience and now know to stay within that range for you to avoid having too much caffeine. Everyone is unique and different on feeling the effects of too much caffeine. Find your balance.

The amount of caffeine intake and how it affect the body depends on factors such as genetics, weight, and metabolism to name a few common factors. Some people are just more prone to being sensitive to caffeine. According to research, smokers metabolize caffeine twice as fast as nonsmokers.

Timing of caffeine consumption seems to have an affect as well.

The effects of caffeine in coffee can take from 3 hours to 5 hours or more to wear off. Some people will burn through the caffeine faster or more slowly because we are all different. For example, you have a grande latte at 6pm and you intend to go to bed at 9pm, odds are high that you will be up way past 9pm your target bed time. If you do doze off, in most cases many won’t have a restful nights sleep. The time of day is a factor when you consume your caffeine intake.

I wanted to share some of the positive health benefits of drinking coffee. This is not meant to give only one side of the story from the research that I have done. Later I will write on the negative affects of drinking coffee so that my readers can see that there is a balance here and I’m not trying to be biased in my articles. I am trying to remain neutral and focus on factual information. My intent is to give some information given by scientiests and researchers that I document my sources below. I suggest just use common sense with anything in life is to take everything in moderation particularly in regards to what we consume or drink.

Are there known documented Health Benefits Of Coffee?

Coffee contains as we all know caffeine which is a stimulant, but that is not all. Studies show that coffee contains antioxidants that could reduce inflammation and protect against certain diseases. These studies that were done on coffee drinkers that consumed two or more cups a day discovered that coffee drinkers are less likely to die from heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and renal disease.

Some of the research done on coffee beans indicate that there are a lot more positive reasons to drink a moderate amount of coffee. Coffee drinkers also exhibit positive health benefits of drinking coffee. Caffeine helps pick you up by acting on your brain to improve mental and physical functions, improves memory and mood.

The coffee bean is known to contain thousands of different botancial compounds. The scientists currently have no idea of what these compounds in regards to the benefits of drinking coffee. They don’t currently know which compounds are responsible for the health benefits that are currently shown.

There maybe more healing properties of coffee that we don’t know yet. More research is needed to get an idea of how these compounds play in the health of humans that drink coffee.

Studies do show that coffee is a major source of nutrients, antioxidants, B Vitamins, potassium, and riboflavin. This makes sense to me about the nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and the botanical compounds in the coffee.

Most coffees are grown in areas that have very fertile soil. This means that their coffee is grown in dirt that is high in all types of nutrients and other good things come from the soil that the coffee bushes absorb in their plant ecosystem as they are maturing on the trees and remain during the process of being turned into coffee for consumption.

Here are some simple explanations for the terms we use here at BreaieStore to describe the types of grinds we offer. All of our grinds start out with whole roasted coffee beans.

Drip Grind

Drip grind is a fine or very find grind of coffee beans that is even in texture. Normally used for the standard drip coffee makers because this the easiest way to make coffee. Drip grind coffee is usually prepared in coffee makers that use paper or metal filters. The brew drips through the drip grind and flows through to the serving pot of coffee.

Whole Coffee Beans

Whole coffee beans are coffee beans that have not been ground. The grinding of the coffee beans are done by the purchaser. Whole bean coffee holds its’ freshness longer as well as create a fresh cup of coffee. Whole beans store well over time and retain their flavor for when needed for use.

Grinding the coffee beans are usually done moments before brewing coffee to obtain a complex and fresh coffee. Depending on type of coffee bean grinder you have as well as type of coffee you want to brew, there are many options for making artisan coffee at home or the office with whole coffee beans.

Espresso Grind

Espresso Grind is very finely ground coffee beans. The coffee grind looks like chocolate powdered sugar or very fine beach sand. Espresso is a small shot of highly concentrated coffee. Espresso coffee is made by forcing high pressure very hot water through the finely ground coffee beans. The espresso grind must be consistent to get the right espresso coffee.

French Press

French press grind does not work well with a finer grind bean because a finer grind needs less time with the water. The coarser the grind the more time the beans will need to brew to get the right taste.

There is also a coffee maker called a French press that uses the French press ground coffee beans that makes small batch coffee that is famous for producing strong coffee with a different technique that does not scald the coffee. This coffee brewing process brings out the flavors of the coffee in this unique procedure.

What Is Single Origin Coffee?

Single origin coffee is coffee that is grown in one known geographic area. This geographic area can be an entire country, a region of a country, or one variety of coffee that is planted on a small farm within that specific area.

Another characteristic of single origin coffee is these beans are not mixed with other coffees from other areas to create a blended coffee. The single origin coffee remains pure unadulterated coffee in its’ original form and not mixed with other coffee to create a blend.

The taste distinction of single origin coffee tends to have a unique exotic taste with a flavor that is more bold and robust compared to a blended coffee. Therefore, single origin coffee is of a higher quality coffee.

The growing process of single origin is also a distinction to consider. Single origin coffee is grown within a single known geographical area, some single origin coffees are specifically grown on small farms. Single origin grown coffee developed by geo specific growth retains a unique flavor and character of that location the coffee is grown in.

Rain levels, elevation, growing conditions, maturation of the coffee beans which are actually a fruit all contribute to a very unique single origin coffee.

After harvest, the right processing of the coffee beans, storing, and roasting of the beans help identify the specific area of where the coffee was grown.

All of these specific to a geo location specific growing area gives the special single origin coffee an exclusive advantage as a prized coffee bean for uniqueness as a one of flavor that is difficult to duplicate.
